I doubled this yarn and used a size 11 needle...however, I think it can be done in any size and weight of yarn. Just do a swatch for the size you would like and go for it. No gauge. The infinity pictured is 24" x 8", the scarf would be double the length to 48".
Abbreviations:
K: knit
K2tog: knit two together
YO: yarn over
WYIF: with yarn in front
For scarf: Cast on 30
For Infinity: cast on 30 stitches with a provisional cast on in a scrap yarn.
Row 1 (set up row): *k1, yo; repeat from * to end
Row 2: *wyif slip 1, yo, k2tog; repeat from * to end.
Repeat row 2 until the scarf is the length you would like.
For scarf: Bind off: *k1, k2tog, pass first k st over; repeat from * to end
For Infinite: place stitch from provisional cast on onto a needle, use a third needle for a three needle bind off. This does a pretty good job of hiding the seam.
Block if necessary, weave in your ends and enjoy!
Thank you so much for this lovely pattern.
ReplyDeleteInformation on yarn? How much of what kind?
ReplyDeleteI see the needle size 11. Or how to figure it?
My granddaughter would love to knit this herself.
Or receive it as a gift.
Or maybe both.
It is beautiful and I have been wanting to try Brioche.
Thanks so much.
Thanks, Gloria.
ReplyDeleteThe yarn on this is handspun. I actually doubled the yarn to get it bulkier (not sure if that is a word). As you can see from the photos it's very bulky...i would go with any bulky yarn or double your worsted weight. There is no gauge. I hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteWhat does wyif mean?
ReplyDeleteHi Terrie....I have updated the pattern to include the abbreviations. wyif mean with yarn in front.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand "provisional cast on" nor what a 3-needle bind off is. Please explain!
ReplyDeleteBoth these terms have YouTube videos that explain them, they are each a lesson on their own,
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kat. I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteHow long did you make the one in the picture? It looks like a nice length for a double wrap. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't take very long since it was such bulky yarn...within a week. It's big and bulky....and soft and fluffy.
ReplyDeleteI think the question from Anonymous concerned the length of the scarf, not the length of time it took to make it. I would like to know this too.
ReplyDeleteI miss read this, thanks. The infinity is 24" x 8" and the scarf would be double the length.
ReplyDeleteHi!! was supposed to gift daughter a "cushy stitch" wide item a year ago! I think this is it.
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming the slip is "as if to purl"? I didn't check other brioche patterns..it was easier to ask you! heehee
thank you for pattern! an easy one, too, at that..as long as I don't drop/mess up.
Christine
It is purl wise....as if to purl...enjoy!

ReplyDeleteKaty....it does increase to 60 so you can do the double knitting of the brioche. I will update the pattern with that information to and any more confusion. Thanks for letting me know.
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern easy!! But I used Lion thick and I can't imagine wrapping that thick around neck twice. Maybe I should do it once around neck. If I do how long should it be?? Karen
ReplyDeleteThank you. The yarn this is knitted with is very thick....the cowl is meant to be bulky around the neck. However, if you would like it only wrapped once, just measure around your neck for the size you want and gauge to that. You can try half the length it is, but not sure how it would fit you. Good Luck!

ReplyDeleteSo I understand. I simply repeat only row 2 whether I'm knitting in the round and/or back and forth???
ReplyDeleteI do ow one once and then do row 2 over and over till finished??
Jean....this scarf is knit back and forth from a provisional cast on then bound off with three needles. Row 2 would not be the same if you chose to knit it in the round. Although it appears like your knitting the same thing over and over, in brioche, you're actually knitting the other stitch you slip. would differently if you're only working from the front of the work. But for the back and forth, yes just repeat row 2 after the set up row. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteI got to the end of my first 'Row 2' and had a stitch left over...where did I go wrong? I cast on 30 stitches, and then complete row 1 of k1,yo which gave me 45 stitches, right? If 'Row 2' is wyif slip 1 yo k2tog, each step uses up 4 stitches, right? I'm a novice knitter, if you can't already tell :)
ReplyDeleteI'll have to re-knit to double check. Will do as soon as I can.
ReplyDeleteI am very confused about row 2 can you explain it?
ReplyDeleteEm...with your yarn in front, slip a stitch. then move your yarn to the back over your needle. this makes the yarn over. then knit 2 together. this repeats across the row. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteI just finished knitting this pattern without the provisional cast on and just seamed the ends together to make the infinity scarf. After seeing how obvious the seam is, I'd like to attempt using the provisional cast on and three needle bind off method. As I'm beginning this pattern, I notice the number of stitches on your needle increases after the first row and you end the scarf with that increased number of stitches. Wouldn't that mean the provisional cast on has the beginning number of stitches and the last row you would be binding off with would have the increased number of stitches? Shouldn't both rows have the same number of stitches when binding them off together?
ReplyDeleteI hope this makes sense. Thanks!
Help. Does the setup tow really end with a yarn over? I can’t imagine how you would start the second row with the yarn in front tonslip the first stitch. What am I missing here? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteTwo experienced knitters tried this....
ReplyDeleteQuestions:
How do you end a row with yo?
Wyif...do you slip as a purl or as a knit?
Thank you.
Please clarify needle sizing - mm, US? Thanks
