Here is a two for one.
Easy to knit as a scarf or connect for a cowl. I have made a cowl and describe a couple of
ways to do that.
Experience Level: Intermediate
Materials: - 400+ yards of worsted weight yarn (You can vary this based on the width and length you would like to make.)
- US 7 needles ( A third needle will be needed if you would like to do the three needle bind off)
Materials: - 400+ yards of worsted weight yarn (You can vary this based on the width and length you would like to make.)
- US 7 needles ( A third needle will be needed if you would like to do the three needle bind off)
Abbreviations:
C4F: Cable front cross by placing 2 stitches on your cable needle and holding in front of work. Knit two stitches from left needle then knit 2 stitches from cable needle.
CO: cast on
k: knit
p: purl
k2tog: knit 2 sts together
RS: right side
SKP: (slip, knit, pass) slip 1 st knitwise to the right-hand needle, knit 1 st from the left needle, then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. One decrease has been made.
st(s): stitch(es)
WS: wrong side
yo: yarn over
Pattern Stitch: (multiple of 10 + 4)
Row 1 (RS): K1, k2tog, yo, *P2, K4, P2, K2tog, yo*; repeat from * to * until one stitch remains on the needle, K1.
Row 2, 4, 6 and 8 (WS): K1, P2, *K2, P4, K2, P2*; repeat from * to * until one stitch remains on the needle, K1.
Rows 3: K1, yo, SKP, *P2, C4F, P2, yo, SKP*; repeat from * to * until one stitch remains on the needle, K1.
Rows 5: Repeat Row 1
Rows 7: K1, yo, SKP, *P2, K4, P2, yo, SKP*; repeat from * to * until one stitch remains on the needle, K1.
Repeat rows 1-8 for pattern.
For Scarf: CO 54 sts. Work in pattern stitch to desired length, ending with a row 8, bind off, block and enjoy!
For Cowl: You can simply cast on as for the scarf, knit the piece through row 7 and pick up the cast on stitches for a three needle bind off (this is what I did). You can also, just sew the stitches together to make the cowl once you have bound off. Or you can do a provisional cast on, knit the piece, then put your cast on stitches on needle for the three needle bind off.
NOTE: For the cowl, remember that you want to do your three needle bind off on the back side so do not complete row 8 of the pattern. Row 8 should be your bind off with the right sides together.

This is such a wonderfully interesting pattern. I can't wait to start my next project based on your pattern stitch. I think I may try it as a cowl with SZ 9 circular needles. I have been searching for an interesting design for a while. I think I have found it-- thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for your lovely comments. I look forward to seeing your cowl. I'm working on an infinity scarf version of the Reversible Circles of Lace pattern also....should have it posted soon.
Oh wow this is beautiful! Thank you for sharing it!
This pattern is so beautiful! Have to tell you that I pinned it to my pinterest board to save it and it has had the most repinned of all! I think the yarn is so beautiful as well. Where did you find it? What brand and color please?
Thank you so much for sharing that. Trust when I say it's SO soft. I got the yarn at a little shop in Picton, Ontario. This is the yarn http://www.yarn.com/product/webs-knitting-yarns-mirasol-miski/
I'm sure you could find it. Enjoy and thanks again!
I can't seem to make this pattern work. It doesn;t seem to line up for me.
This is simoly knit as a scarf and cast off together. If you have knit as a scarf then it should line up for the three needle bind off. Unfortunately without seeing or knowing anything it would be hard for me to tell what you're doing. Thanks for knitting the pattern, hope it works out for you.
This is a beautiful pattern, however, I knit across the first row and everything is fine, but the second row is short a stitch...am I missing something?
I'm not sure. They both have the same amount of stitches.
And thank you for the compliment.
Can I do this pattern on size 6 UK needles?
You could, depending on your yarn. It's a size bigger than I used, but it's a scarf so it will be forgiving. Enjoy!
Can you do this pattern in the round on circular needles?
The pattern is written to work back and forth which makes the design stripe with the length. I'm sure you could convert it to knit in the round lengthwise instead, but the design would change to something shorter rather than long. Happy Knitting.
