The story with this throw is….I made the first as version 1 is written. However when I started the second, I got carried away and forgot to do my knit rows…so version 2. I have put version 2 on here since the striping is easier to see. For version 1, I used Ella Rae Seasons, which stripes on it’s own…then I added a striping pattern. For version 2, I used Berroco Vintage Chunky and kept it much simpler.

Can you send me the pattern for just the colorado river throw in the blue that you did. Im new at this and reading both versions was a bit confusing. id you use a circular needle on a long cable? And what yarn did you use? Its absolutely beautiful!!!
ReplyDeletemy email is sce0331@yahoo.com
Please could we have more detail regarding the Blue colorado River Throw pattern as I'm sure I am not the knitter who would love this.
ReplyDeleteI would be glad to provide more detail...what would you like to know? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi - the blue throw is beautiful - did you use Ella Rae Seasons 17 and another color? If you did, what was the other color? Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi Katy....thank you. I did use Ella Rae seasons and I do believe the blue was 17, however I can't find the label for the green to give you the number and I can't find it online. I'll keep trying.
ReplyDeleteHi Christina,
ReplyDeleteThank you for replying. I would love to knit this and sorting out the closest colour to your design will be hard enough in NZ. What I would dearly love would be a guide for the number of rows you have used with each colour sequentially so that I can replicate your rather magnificent throw.
Hi Maggie......so glad to hear from someone in NZ. The row count for two colors is at the bottom of the pattern. I would say you could probably use colors 17 and 22. The green isn't as light was what I used, but it would be what I would choose if I had to do it again. Good luck, can't wait to see what you come up with. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, my name is Stephanie...I'm new to all this, did you use a cable for this and how long if so. Ella Rae color 17 and which other color?
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie....I used 17 and I cannot find the tag for the other colour, but I'll keep looking. Did a poor job of record keeping. I did not use a cable needle. This is technically a lace pattern because the curves are made with yarn overs. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteStephanie here again...how do you cast on 177 sts. without a cable?
ReplyDeleteHi Stephanie....I usually use a long tail cast on or knitted cast on for this type of project. Thanks.
ReplyDeletei understand the cast on....a regular straight needle wont hold 177 stitches with bulky yarn. Thats why I was asking about a cable.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I misunderstood what you were asking, it seemed like you were asking about a cable needle. I used a circular needle, which you may call a cable needle. Thanks for clarifying. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteCan you send me the pattern just for the blue afghan also thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe blue is version 1 above and the colour variation is written on the page. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat yarn did you use for Afghan 2? I notice version 2 uses much less yarn. Is it the difference in bulkiness of the yarn or did you make version 2 smaller? I love the Ella Rae blue but I want to use a machine washable yarn so I'm on the hunt. Any suggestions? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I just now noticed you used Berroco Chunky for version 2 and it's machine washable. I'll keep looking, however, for a variagated yarn to try and duplicated version 1. It's absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nancy. Enjoy the knitting!
ReplyDeleteHi, I am trying to figure out how much yarn to buy in both colors for version 1. Can you specify how much of each? Thanks, Debbi
ReplyDeleteHi, can you tell me how much of each color for version 1?
ReplyDeleteThank you
Hi Debbi...it's literally half and half...so 1310 of each colour. One side is mostly blue and the other green but the rows are the same amount for each colour. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Can't wait yo make this, so beautiful! One more question, do you repeat rows 1 and 2 for version 1 or 1 -10? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteRepeat rows 1-10 for version 1. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHi Christina,
ReplyDeleteHave now received wool from USa and have knitted the first 6 inches of the c.R. throw and am very pleased with how it looks already. I hadn't realised previously that the this particular yarn was self-striping. Thank you again for the pattern.
Margaret/maggie NZ
I love that the yarn was self-striping...made for an even better pattern. Enjoy the knitting.
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, what are the dimensions of the finished throw? I have used a lot less yarn than I bought. I am almost at the end and debating about making it longer.
ReplyDeleteThe blue is 48" x 60" and the gray is 38" x 48". You can make it any size....I usually just stop when it looks good to cover someone. The gray was made for a child. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteI am making the blue and it is 39" wide and I think I will work it back to the blue because it is very short now. I am just about through with the pattern once! I thought it only went one time...I must knit very tightly? Thanks for your response
ReplyDeleteDebbi, usually you want to make the length 6 to 10 inches more that then width...that will make a proportionate throw. I hope this helps. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteThank you Christina. I'm gonna bring it back to the blue and finish off at row 326. I've been getting such compliments! Can't wait till it's done!
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, I finished up the pattern stitch with a row 10. Should I knit 3 rows here? Or should I knit two more rows then bind off on the right side?
ReplyDeleteDo you have to shape the end and block it so it will be scallopped? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Debbi, the end isn't as pronounced as the beginning. You might be able to shape it more depending on the yarn you used. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteDebbi, you will need to do the three rows and bind off. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOk thanks! I did it once and it was so flat I pulled it out and went to a row 10 then knit the three rows and bound it off. Thank you so much! Love the throw!
ReplyDeleteGreat! I'd love to see it. Ping me on ravelry with a photo if you post.
ReplyDeleteHi Christina,
ReplyDeletejust to let you know that I had enough yarn to make 2 throws. They were to use when grandchildren came to visit and sometimes watch TV. The first 2 to visit loved them so much they wanted to take them home but had to be convinced that the other 5 grandchildren would want to use them too!
That is amazing. So glad everything worked out. I know those children will love those moments and memories at your home.
ReplyDeleteCan you please send the pattern for the blue afghan and also what kind of yarn you used?
ReplyDeleteodonnell.tatianna@gmail.com
Looks beautiful.
Tatianna, the pattern is above. Just select it all, copy and paste into a word document. The blue was made with Ella Rae Seasons yarn, which they are no longer making. But you might still be able to find some online. Bulky yarn will do. Enjoy the knitting.
ReplyDeleteHere in South Africa I do no have access to many different types of yarn. I have some beautiful purples but in double knit(worsted I think). What size needles must I use and how many stitches? Fantastic piece of art.
ReplyDeleteHey I would love to make this for my grandma as she loves blues!!!!! Um could you tell me what needle you used and were you got the yarn thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe needle sizes and yarns are listed at the beginning of the pattern an paragraph above. The Ella Rae is no longer made...that is the first picture. The second is made with Berroco Vintage Chunky which you can find online and in many local shops. Hope this helps.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Hi, I noticed back in an earlier post on 4/9/14, you said you can make this throw any size... Well, I want to make version one, but bigger, as I usually cast on around 250-260 stitches to make a blanket the width of a king size bed. I'm more on the beginner end of knitting, so I wanted to ask if I cast on more stitches than the 177 in the pattern, will the pattern still turn out okay? So for Row 1, I would still K5 at the beginning and K4 at the end, but it won't matter how many times I repeat the middle? Does it matter if I cast on an odd number or an even number?
ReplyDeleteHi there. You can make the blanket wider but it has to be by multiples of the pattern stitch which is 14, which would mean it has to be a odd number. If you want to get close to the numbers you mentioned you can cast on 247 or 261 and the pattern will work out the same. Note that you will need more yarn that I used and recommended. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! So far, this is the simplest chevron pattern I've come across that isn't either too bulky or too lacy. Just in the middle, where I like it!
ReplyDeleteCould you please post a picture of a corner of the finished product (laid flat, if possible)? I want to see how the edges finish, before I get too far into my project.
I wish I could, Amber. They have both been gifted out. I hope this works out for you. Enjoy the knitting!!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is very nicely laid out.I especially liked the article on the Chevron Stripe Throw, in shades of blue.
ReplyDeleteThank you....I really appreciate the kind words.
ReplyDeleteHi Christina, I love these beautiful throws! I'm disappointed the Ella Rae yarn is no longer made. Do you know if there is any selfstriping yarn that would give a similar effect?
ReplyDeleteThanks! ♡ Jan

Hi Jan....I completely agree about the Ella Rae. As you know, it did a little striping...not sure off the top of my head about a replacement. Perhaps someone at your local shop would be more familiar...I am not unfortunately. Good luck with the search.
ReplyDeleteThis yarn has not been discontinued, I just bought some about 2 weeks ago. I looked it up on Ravelry and found this:
ReplyDeleteMay 1, 2013: Despite what you might have read in a few forum threads, Seasons is NOT discontinued. :-)
July 14, 2014: 219 yards is correct. All the newest dyelots have those labels on them. The first run ever had 262 yards on them - but we found that was a mistake from the manufacturer & needed to revise the labels.
