Reverse Circles of Infinity

This reversible scarf was worked in a circle to achieve an infinity.  The yarn used for this model was 2 hanks of Ella Rae Merino Lace in violet black.  That made a large infinity with enough length for three wraps.  It can be made much smaller and narrower if you'd like.  If you would only like 2 wraps, cast on 270 stitches instead of the 400.  It will also reduce your yardage by 1/3.  The pattern is identical to my Reversible Circles of Lace with a few modifications to create the circle for knitting in the round.  There will be two rows where you will have to move your marker to properly place the holes.

Experience Level: Intermediate
Gauge for this example on this yarn is 3 stitches = 1".
Materials: 450-850 yds Lace or Fingering Weight Yarn -  (This can be made smaller or larger depending on yarn used.  Just check your gauge to alter the cast on sitches and go for it.)
- US 7 (4.5 mm needles)

Abbreviations:
BO: bind off
CO: cast on
k: knit

p: purl
k2tog: knit 2 sts together
SK2P: slip 1 st knitwise to the right-hand needle, k2tog, pass the slipped st over the knit sts.

SM: slip marker
st(s): stitch(es)
yo: yarn over (note: there are  some 3 yarn overs in a row to create the circle)

Pattern Stitch: (multiple of 10)
Row 1: yo, k2tog, k1, k2tog, yo, k5 - repeat to marker, SM
Row 2: Purl across, SM
Row 3:  k1, yo, SK2P, yo, k1, SK2P, yo(3x), k2tog - repeat to marker, SM
Row 4: P7, K1, *p9, k1*, repeat from * to * until 2 sts from end; p2. (the k1 should fall in the middle of your three yarn overs.)

Row 12:  Purl across

Instructions:
CO 400 sts (for large)  You can cast on less in multiples of 10.
Set up:
Place marker at beginning of row and continue working in the round making sure you have one half twist for a moebius and no twists for an infinity.
Row 1: K across to marker, SM
Row 2: Purl across to marker, SM
Repeat these two rows one more time.
Work in pattern stitch to desired width.  Bind off loosely.  Block, tuck ends and enjoy!

Thank you. It does look like bubbles.

This would make a lovely Florida accessory! Nice work! Thanks.

Just a note/minor correction: for a Moebius you need to make HALF a twist. Cat Bordhi has some great videos on YouTube showing how to cast on for a Moebius.
Because of the half twist, the two sides of the cowl are reversed. This pattern would be great because it is reversible.
Thank you for the lovely pattern. I have some yarn that is begging to be a Moebius in this pattern.

Christina said...

Thank you. I have corrected. Hope you enjoy the knit.

Beautiful wok. Will enjoy doing this one. Thank you. ;-)

What is the total length of the large size. I can't work it out as you have not included a gauge measurement. As I will be using a different yarn, I need to know how many stitches to cast on to attain the required length.
Also, I don't understand how to create a moebius when knitting in the round. Could you explain, please?

Can this be done on DP needles or must it be circular needles?

Anonymous said...

It looks beautiful, I may give it a try. To Anonymous: it would be hard to CO 400 stitches on DP needles you would have to redesign the whole pattern

A perfect scarf for spring....that is if spring ever gets here!

Could this scarf be adapted for a young gal - age 5?

My granddaughter would love a scarf similar to this and I am having a hard time finding a pattern to use.

Did anyone come up with a lenght on this? I would like to make it a double wrap but have no idea how many to CO.

Thanks - love this pattern

270 sts for a double wrap. 400 is a triple, so... 400/3 x 2 = 266. You need a multiple of 10, so round up to 270.

The finished sample is 124" around and 8" wide (8 circles). That would make the gauge 3 stitches per inch based on the 400 stitches cast on. It is lace so I used a larger needle to create the lace making the gauge grow.

Christina said...

The wrap completed as written wrapped three times around, so for a double, the 270 should do what you want. Thanks.

Is it possible to make this with two hanks of mulberry silk yarn? Would I use the same needle size? Thanks.

Christina said...

If you'll tell me a little more about the yarn I may be able to help you. Who is the manufacturer? Doe the ball band have a gauge? How much yardage is in a hank? I can't really take a guess without knowing exactly which yarn you're talking about, but with the info would be happy to try to help.

This is absolutely gorgeous. Thank you. Have subscribed to you after seeing this one. Many thanks.

Thank you, Susan. Enjoy...welcome.

when I printed this pattern first from Knit Picky and then from your blog, ads for Facebook Blueleaf arts end up on top of the directions. I hand wrote the directions from your blogpage but it would be helpful to have them be larger and without superimposed ads and comments right over the pattern. I think I might go crazy knitting this, but I'm trying.

Christina said...

If you highlight the pattern section of the page and copy, you can drop it into a word document without anything but the pattern. Hope you have it now. Good luck with the knitting. enjoy!

Do you have a chart? I got lost on Row 4 and placement of marker at row5

Christina said...

I'm sorry, no chart. I usually chart, but it was a little different with this pattern. I hope it works out for you to get back on track.

Christina, Thank you for your response, I will try again. I love the pattern, its beautiful!-Rita

What is the gauge? What needle length is used for the 400 stitches and for the 270 stitches?

Christina said...

I didn't take a gauge prior to blocking but it should be about 24-26 sts in 4" on the 7. Gauge is not that important. Regarding needle size, I used a 29" circular for both. Up to you and your comfort level with the length for what you use. Some like their stitches spread out and others don't mind the stitches being tight... Enjoy!

Is this actually a mobius pattern casting on both needles with a loop like in the cat bordi you tube video or are you just casting on regular-like and adding a twist before joining?

Christina said...

This is not a mobius cast on, it is worked in the round...just a giant circle. I have updated the language. As you will notice in the directions, there are a lot of stitches cast on in a loop. There is no twist before joining, there is no joining...in the round.

Ms. Christina:

I would like to make three comments:

1: BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU! I've been looking for a pattern to fit some very special yarn I purchased. This is it!

2. Row 10: p2, k1, *p9, k1* repeat from * to * to 7 sts from end; p6, slip next stitch to right needle, remove marker, slip stitch back to left needle, replace marker....what do I do for the seventh left-over stitch that gets moved back to the left needle? Do I purl that one b/c I can't for the life of me figure it out...

3. I would like to do just a plain rectangle with this (for shawl purposes) with Berocco Floret Licorice yarn (Size 4 yarn on Size 8 needles is 4.75 sts to an inch (19 inches over 23 rows to a 4 inch swatch). What would your recommended cast on be for this if I didn't want to hook it together in either Mobius or Infinity style?

Thank you for posting this!

Who, me, confused?

Where does this pattern show to join in the round?

What if I want a straight scarf and then I can stitch it together for a round or Moebius?

Must be tired - it's 4:07 AM.

Christina said...

Hi there...take a look under instructions. You place your marker and continue working in the round with a twist if you want or not. If you want to work this pattern as a straight scarf, look at the pattern "Reversible Circles of Lace" on the pattern page. Link is at the top right. thanks.

I have yarn that I think is DK weight. How many stitches would recommend casting on.?

Thanks so much. Love this pattern

Anonymous said...

Hi, I'm wanting to make this a shawl and working on circs but not in the round. Because I'm not knitting in the round should I make all the purl sts knit, because there aren't any SS sts, right? I"m using Expression Fiber Arts beaded silk worsted. Thanks so much...I can't wait to get started

~Karen~

Anonymous said...

Oh, just re-read the pattern. The only row on the right side that has purls is 9, so I should keep these purls and not knit them.

Thanks again

~Karen~

Christina said...

Hi Karen....if you take a look at the pattern Circle of Lace on my page, you will see the scarf version. That should help. Enjoy the knitting!

Christina said...

For a DK weight, you might take off 100 sts. Hard to tell since I don't know how tight or loosely you knit. Since the pattern is multiples of 10 just make sure what you have left fits. enjoy!

Anonymous said...

Thanks so much. I took my yarn to the local yarn shop and they thought it was heavier than dk - in between that and worsted. Do you think that's too heavy for this pattern?

Thanks again. I think I have about 900 yards or so.

Christina said...

I do not. This can be done in any weight. You just have to reduce the repeats so it isn't huge.

Anonymous said...

Hate to be a pest, but how many stitches would you recommend casting on using worsted weight yarn? I really appreciate any help/ suggestions I can get.

Happy holidays.

I want this pattern to work so badly! I'm a well seasoned knitter, but I typically work in cables and this pattern is making me feel like a bonehead! Sometimes the stitches fall perfectly at the end of the round, sometimes they don't. It's not looking like this at all. Am I just making mistakes? I feel like I am!

Hi Rachel....you do have to move the marker since the pattern jumps one stitch back and forth a bit. I no longer have this finished scarf to check everything so I will have to re-knit. I will update accordingly if I find anything that may be more helpful. Sorry for the trouble you're having.

Unknown said...

Oh, you don't have to go through all that trouble! I moved the marker and followed all of your directions. It's got to be me. It's so simply written that it blows my mind I'm having so much trouble with it. I think I'll really have to slow down and be deliberate. Cabling is easy for me since I tend to have tighter tension. Something light and loose may just take me more time to get in the swing of.

Hi. This scarf is a gorgeous pattern but do you have a UK version knitted on straight needles?

Christina said...

Thank you. The link below is to a scarf version of this pattern which can be knit on straight needles.

I used this pattern to make my granddaughter her first blankie. My granddaughter is now 6 years old and has loved her blankie to pieces, literally. I started this scarf as a replacement blanket at least 10 times and always messed up before I got very far. Now I'm doing the infinity scarf instead. I figure that my granddaughter can wear the scarf and no one will know she still needs her blankie. Anyway, I am wondering about the first time i do the yo of the pattern. I have just finished a purl row. Do I just move the yarn over to knit or do I loop the yo around so I create a stitch there?

Thanks for this amazing pattern. I didn't have trouble with it the first time I used it, but I am six years older and just lose my place as I go. I'll try to concentrate more this time.

Thanks too for your help.
